How do I make an overlap intersection effect for water and stuff?

Hello I was wondering if there is any way for me to make some kind of intersection with 2 sprites, such that the water sprite would go over part of the land sprite and show trough it.

I'm doing something to that affect with a mask but that is not very preforment and does not look as good.
